Tandem Bagel Ludlow

Integrating a Brand into Historic Setting

As Tandem Bagel continued to grow across Western Massachusetts, the owners sought a new location that could support increased production while strengthening the brand’s identity in a new community. Located in a former mill building along Ludlow’s bike path and within walking distance of the historic downtown, the project presented an opportunity to transform a vacant shell into a destination that feels distinctly Tandem while honoring the character of the existing structure.

Make Use of Two Story Factory Space

Building on a long-standing relationship with the owners, we helped translate the evolving Tandem Bagel brand into a cohesive physical experience. The renovation carefully preserves the building’s industrial character while introducing a warm, welcoming atmosphere consistent with the company’s other locations. As Tandem’s first two-story café, the design creates a unique dining experience with high ceilings, generous natural light, and visual connections between the upper-level seating area and the bakery below, allowing customers and staff to remain connected to the baking process.

Design for Saving Historic Buildings Through Expansion and Growth

The project serves as both a neighborhood gathering place and a key operational hub, housing Tandem’s second full-production bakery to support continued growth. A new river-facing deck extends activity outdoors and strengthens the building’s connection to the adjacent bike path and surrounding landscape. As the company’s sixth location—and the third developed in collaboration with our team—the project reflects Tandem Bagel’s expansion into new markets while reinforcing a recognizable and enduring brand presence.
